What brought you to the LWV in Greenville?
About 28 years ago there was local debate pertaining to the continued use of portables to accommodate the growing student population and class size. There were a couple of Greenville County School District trustees who were reluctant to invest in public education at that time. I favored construction of new public-school facilities that would accommodate the existing student population and anticipated student population growth. I also favored smaller class sizes than what some school board trustees were proposing at that time. When invited to join the LWV, I quickly realized that the League was an organization that is highly respected by all civic and elected leaders. The LWV provided the means to find like-minded members of the community as well as a means to amplify our voices.
What would you like to see Greenville LWV do in the next year or so?
As co-chair of the LWVSC Environmental Working Group, I would like to grow the number of Environmental Working Group participants who are from Greenville.
What is the most surprising/interesting thing you’ve learned from being in the LWV?
There were several members of the Greenville and Columbia Leagues who were older than I was when I joined 28 years ago. I really enjoyed listening to them tell of their experiences pertaining to the Leagues and issues that they took on. They were true pioneers of civil rights, women’s rights, and good government.
What is the best place you’ve ever traveled to?
My favorite place is eastern Idaho/western Wyoming. The scenery and wildlife are priceless.
What’s the one thing you want other LWV members to know about you?
As a parent, grandfather, and environmental consultant, I am very concerned about global warming and the challenges that future generations will face. Addressing issues pertaining to global warming will be a primary focus for my life going forward.
