The Deets

  • Married, no children; currently petless after losing their springer spaniel in 2019, which is sad but makes traveling easier.

  • CPA; career with Owens Illinois and Libby Glass in Toledo, OH and (briefly) Dallas, TX; moved to Key West, FL, and worked remotely, including on projects in Portugal and Mexico; later served with an education/health care/housing nonprofit, worked for his wife and was part-time CFO of a community foundation in Key West until retirement in 2021.

  • Moved to Greenville in April; lives in the West End.

What brought you to the LWV in Greenville?

I was a member of the chapter in Key West (FL) and ultimately served on the board there and as treasurer for five years. That position lasted until June of this year (even after the move) and it seemed like a natural transition to join the League here. I’m enjoying being a worker bee.

What would you like to see Greenville LWV do in the next year or so?

More candidate forums at the local level; increase voter turnout in underserved areas like the White Horse Road corridor. The Key West League held a Fifth Tuesday Q&A session with local officials that brought a lot of information to local voters.

What is the most surprising/interesting thing you’ve learned from being in the LWV?

Dealing with different personalities on controversial issues, learning to make sure all voices are heard, listening to those who see things differently and how that leads to better decisions.

What question do you wish people would ask you? I have a lot of experience on the financial side of nonprofits, so I hope folks will ask about how to make reporting to leadership in the nonprofit field more effective.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

My wife and I have really enjoyed the Trivia Mondays at the Whale Beer Collective in the West End. The last round is a betting round similar to Final Jeopardy, where we learned that the best strategy is to bet nothing. We’ve been pretty successful with that approach. I’ve also joined the local birding group and can be found frequently at Conestee Nature Preserve.
